File Converter is an extremely simple app that can take files with one extension and load them into a different format. It offers a clean dialog box-based interface that's easy to use even for those who might never have had to convert files before. Those who have a large number of files in some alien format can even tell the converter app to change them out on a group basis.

Batch conversions are easy to manage since File Converter can run in the background while it ticks through each individual file. The app will notify users once it's complete, which means they can work on something else while they're waiting for it to finish. Though some complicated batch jobs can theoretically take hours, most users will find that they finish up in a relatively short period of time.

Power users can easily integrate File Converter with Windows Explorer, so they won't even have to load the program up before they can open a file. Say someone downloaded a file meant for another operating system. All they would have to do is right click on its icon and then select conversion from the context menu. This gives them the freedom to open almost any file that the converter supports regardless of whether or not they have access to the application that originally created it.

Due to the fact that File Converter leverages the power of existing open source libraries, it supports a large number of both audio and video formats. Users can convert sound to FLAC, OGG, MP3, WAV and AAC. Video formats like MP4, AVI, MKV and WebM are all supported, which makes it suitable for those who want to share videos online and can't be sure what sort of software will be available on the other end.

A much wider variety of input formats are supported, which include everything from 3GP to FLV. Interestingly, input from any video format can be set to output as an animated GIF. Frequent users of social media sites will probably make ample use of this feature.

Image conversion formats are equally as varied. Bitmaps and TIFF documents are acceptable as input. PNG, JPEG and static GIF images are all acceptable output formats. Once again, File Converter throws users a curve ball by giving them the freedom to convert images to the ICO format so they can create their own icons. While images need to be 256x256 pixels in size, or smaller, the conversion process is quite fast.

In fact, so many of the conversions take basically no time at all that users would be forgiven if they thought that File Converter did all of its work in the blink of an eye.
